Ghost fungi spotted in Bayside
The cooler months, and a turn of the season, bring about the fruiting of many fungi species. A Bushland Crew member recently took a walk through George Street Reserve and noticed Ghost Fungi (Omphalotus nidiformis) start to pop up on some of the Coast Tea Tree (Leptospermum laevigatum).
Wild wanders through Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve
We’ve created a wildflower meadow of indigenous vegetation by planting approximately 15,000 new plants and shrubs and 1,000 new trees at Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve. When the meadow opens in July, some areas will remain temporarily fenced to help the new plants and trees establish. There will also be netting to help protect aquatic plantings from the ravenous local ducks. New community facilities also opening in July include a covered shelter, picnic and barbecue facilities, as well as public toilets. This area, called the Community Edge, provides a comfortable place for visitors to relax and enjoy the wildflower meadow.
Creatively mapping Sandringham Village
We’ve installed a creative new landmark in the heart of Sandringham Village. The 2.5m wayfinding “Welcome Mosaic” greets commuters in front of the Sandringham train station and is created in the traditional smaller tesserae style (a mosaic style where small pieces of stone, glass, ceramic, or other hard material are cut into regular shapes and pieced together to create an image). Created by local artist Fabian Scaunich and supported by the Sandy Street Art Project and Sandringham Traders Association, the installation reflects a colourful, artistic map of Sandringham Village and the local foreshore.
