We shall remember them
Remembrance Day 2024
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we honour and remember all those who have served our country in times of conflict.
106 years ago, 11 November 1918 marked the end of a conflict that had thrown the world into turmoil and claimed the lives of many thousands of young Australians.
On the same day every year since then, we honour those who serve and those who gave their lives for our country in war.
Remembrance Day Service on Sunday 10 November at Hampton RSL
This service is happening on Sunday 10 November at 10:45am at Hampton RSL, 25 Holyrood Street, Hampton. Morning tea will be provided.
Pompey Elliott and World War I with Ross McMullin
To commemorate Remembrance Day, Bayside Libraries has invited Ross McMullin to discuss his book "Pompey Elliott", a comprehensive and award-winning biography of Australia's most famous fighting general in World War I. Head over to Brighton Library on Tuesday 12 November from 2pm to 3pm for the session.
The Ode
Written in the early days of World War I, The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them.
Green Point
Green Point at the end of South Road is home to the Brighton War Memorial, a heritage listed Cenotaph.
The site was completed in 1927 as a memorial to locals who lost their lives during World War I. In recent times it has taken on a broader meaning to commemorate the sacrifice and service by Australians in other wars, conflicts and peacekeeping campaigns.
We will remember you.
Lest we forget.
