Meet our friendly librarian Laura

We had a chat with Laura to find out what she loves most about her job and why she’s passionate about working at the library.

Why did you choose to work at the library?

I’ve found libraries a place of comfort since I was a kid but I also love connecting with people and organising events, so working at libraries is a mix of many things I enjoy doing. Plus, I get to chat to people about books.

What is the best part of your job?

I love seeing kids being excited about visiting the library. Whether it’s to borrow books or attend our events, being a part of fostering a love of books and libraries in children is the most joyful part of my job

What is your favourite part about working at the library?

I love helping out with the BLAST events for kids. Seeing kids having fun and making something they’re proud of to show their parents is wonderful.

Which library program or service have/do you most like sharing with the community?

I love telling new members about our Library of Things collection because they’re usually pleasantly surprised that they’re able to borrow sewing machines, pizza ovens and other objects. I also like telling kids about our BLAST events when they’re borrowing Minecraft or LEGO books. They always get excited that they can share their special interests with other kids.

Do you have a favourite reading genre?

I read a mix of genres but have a soft spot for literary and translated fiction. I love stories so as long as it’s interesting, I’m invested.

Who was the first author that sparked your interest in the world of books?

The first author I sought out for myself was Jacqueline Wilson. I read so many of her books when I was a kid and found her books relatable and comforting. She would often write about children going through difficult situations but still finding joy and happiness amongst it.
