World Environment Day 2024

Celebrate World Environment Day 2024 by exploring and enjoying your local environment.

Bayside boasts 17 kilometres of foreshore stretching from Brighton to Beaumaris, along with seven preserved bush and heathland reserves and the stunning 14-hectare Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve.

Why not celebrate by getting out into Bayside’s local environment or head to Bayside's Community Nursery this Saturday 8 June for the annual Gala Day. You can buy a great range of local indigenous plants, learn from nursery staff and volunteers and enjoy a free sausage sizzle!

Planting for the future🌳

This year’s World Environment Day emphasises restoration and we are doing our part by planting more than 1,400 trees a year to improve Bayside’s urban environment.

Every year from May to September we plant trees on nature strips and parks which are tailored to each location and aim to:

  • Preserve, enhance and complement the local planting theme and character
  • Increase canopy to achieve a greener, cooler urban environment
  • Provide a diverse tree population, adaptable to environmental change
  • Minimise conflict with infrastructure including overhead powerlines.

Trees in Bayside are cared for by a team of passionate, qualified arborists and landscapers.

Recently planted trees are supported with tree stakes and mulch at the base and fitted with a watering well. These watering wells allow the water within to penetrate the tree’s root, which is the best place for new trees to be watered.

Take part in our Gardens for Wildlife program

Gardens for Wildlife is a free program designed to inspire and encourage you to create habitat in your gardens and open spaces, nature strips, patios or balconies to support local native wildlife.

We are hosting a training session for our Gardens for Wildlife program on June 17, which will discuss challenges faced by small birds in urban areas and different ways you can attract them to visit or nest.
