New artwork launched at Landcox Park
A new public art sculpture by Gunnai, Waradjuri, Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta artist Robert Michael Young has been unveiled at Landcox Park in Brighton East.
Young’s ‘Sovereign Tree’ represents healing and acknowledgement of Bayside’s indigenous history in the spirit of reconciliation.
The artwork depicts a scar tree which provides us with an important link to culture and the past, and opens a space for conversation about place, history and healing.

Bayside Mayor, Cr Fiona Stitfold said the sculpture creates a place for people to come together and reflect on Bayside’s Indigenous history.
"Sovereign Tree creates a space for conversation about place, history and healing,” Cr Stitfold said.
“The sculpture is not only a wonderful addition to the much-loved park and open space, but also helps to create a sense of place and community for all who experience and ponder its meaning and significance," she said.
The work was commissioned following a recommendation by the Arts & Gallery Advisory Committee to Bayside City Council for a work of art that acknowledged the Indigenous history of the area.
The artwork reflects the objectives the Bayside Arts, Culture and Libraries Strategy 2023-2027 and Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2022-2024 to encourage support and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture in Bayside.
