The upgraded Black Rock Life Saving Club is now officially open after a plaque unveiling from Bayside Mayor, Councillor Fiona Stitfold, along with Ryan Batchelor MLC, Life Saving Victoria and club members.

Construction commenced on the building in September 2022, with the former facility in urgent need for a modern renewal to accommodate both its growing membership and the increase in visitors to Black Rock Beach.

Council invested $5 million in the project, with the Victorian Government contributing $2 million and Black Rock Life Saving Club giving $250,000 for the construction and $150,000 for the fit out.

The redevelopment provides better viewing areas for patrols to increase public safety, improved amenities, and enhanced inclusivity and accessibility that includes gender neutral changerooms and public toilets.

Cr Stitfold said the upgraded facility provides a welcome home for the passionate members of Black Rock Life Saving Club and the wider community.

“The club plays an important role in this community and Council has delivered a facility which will be enjoyed for generations to come,” said Cr Stitfold.

“We appreciate the support from the Black Rock Life Saving Club, Life Saving Victoria and the Victorian Government for helping us with this project.”

The multipurpose space, kitchen, bar and deck area are available for community hire.

Club Vice-President Cath McGrath said the committee was proud of the new facility, which came to life after a comprehensive community consultation process.

“We worked with Council to ensure the building met operational needs while creating an accessible space for all. This has been achieved, and our members are looking forward to summer,” she said.

“We will host events and look forward to welcoming the local community. We have already enjoyed sunsets from the balcony.”
