All eyes were on Hampton Library last week, with the installation of Council’s latest mural by Cat Rabbit.

Cat Rabbit is a Melbourne-based textile artist, designer, and children’s book illustrator and author. Her books include Owl Know How (2013) and Too Much for Turtle (2015), co-authored with Isobel Knowles, and How to Make Friends: A Bears Guide (2021).

Cat Rabbit’s exhibition, The soft library, at the Bayside Gallery in 2021 was highly popular and embraced by the Bayside community. The exhibition paid tribute to the library as a place of learning and wonder, a home for the endless possibilities of the imagination. So, who better than Cat Rabbit to create a mural for the outside of the Hampton Library as part of its refurbishment.

“Libraries are such special places — they can be a place of exciting discovery as well as a bastion of safety and calm. I wanted this mural to be a happy invitation to all people to come in and experience the library in their own way,” Cat Rabbit said.

The mural pictures friendly elements such as pencils, two-colour pens, date stamps, borrowing cards and books which float amongst the colourful crazy-quilt background, representing the connection of many stories and ideas coming together to form the wonder that is a library.

“And of course, there are bears — what’s a library without a li-bear-ian?” Cat Rabbit.
