A message from the Mayor on the Suburban Rail Loop project

Bayside Mayor, Cr Fiona Stitfold is writing to residents impacted by the Suburban Rail Loop project

The Victorian Government’s Suburban Rail Loop project and their proposed Precinct Key Directions for Cheltenham may significantly impact Bayside and dramatically change the neighbourhood character of Highett, Hampton East, Cheltenham and Pennydale.

Bayside City Council is deeply concerned about the Precinct Key Directions and the lack of meaningful engagement with Council and the community.

While we will continue to advocate for positive outcomes from the Victorian Government reforms, it is important that you make your voices heard.

The key directions propose a short-sighted response to the complicated issue of housing supply that will leave Councils and communities to deal with the consequences.

Council’s concerns include:

  • Proposed height limits up to 18 storeys against existing one and two-level homes
  • The impact on the environment from significant population growth
  • Increased traffic congestion that will place excessive pressure on a local road network that is already struggling, including Bay Road
  • Lack of plans to replace the loss of Sir William Fry Reserve and little detail on what enhancements to existing open space could mean for residents or Council land
  • Challenges to community facilities, services and infrastructure with an influx of new residents, with no clear direction on how additional services will be funded or provided.

Please provide your feedback on the SRL Precinct Key Directions to the Suburban Rail Loop Authority and Victorian Government - consultation closes 5pm on 30 June 2024.
