North Point car park upgrade

We're improving parking, pedestrian safety and drainage as part of the North Road Masterplan.

The car park is being redesigned in stages to accommodate more car spaces without the loss of any open space. We are also improving the drainage and facilitating dedicated boat and trailer parking. A new roundabout will improve traffic flow and safety.

This project is being delivered in stages due to the complexity of the site and soil conditions.

Find out more about the North Road Foreshore Masterplan.

Stage 1: completed December 2022

Early in the construction program, unexpected land fill material was discovered in the soil during car park excavation works. Comprehensive testing confirmed the presence of contaminants in the soil profile, which have been managed by specialist contractors during the carpark works.

Our plans for the carpark were amended to ensure the site remains safe for our community and the popular car park could be returned for public use as soon as possible.

To expedite the reopening of the car park, we raised the level of the car park by approximately 20cm, which is around the height of a standard speed bump, and reinstated kerb edges and line marking. This short to medium term solution enabled the car park to be reopened for the busy summer period.

Stage 2

We are continuing to work with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and landowner, the Department of Energy, Environment, and Climate Action (DEECA) to replan our full upgrade of the site, with consideration of the complex soil conditions.

To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the environmental conditions across the North Point foreshore, we have engaged specialist contractors to undertake soil testing at various depths and locations between Cole Street and Miller Street. These works will be carried out in accordance with relevant environmental standards and guidelines, including EPA guidelines, and with the consent of DEECA..

Testing is planned throughout the 2023 winter months, weather permitting.

The playground, boat ramp, and carpark will remain open throughout the testing program.
