Get the best from your solar system

With warm weather on the way, learn how to maximise your solar power

Rooftop solar has many benefits, from helping you take control of your household energy to reducing electricity bills and greenhouse gas emissions.

With spring and summer fast approaching, learn how to maximise the benefits of your solar system by using it to its full potential using the below tips.

Maximise your solar power with these tips

Use the monitoring system

Using the in-built monitoring in your solar system, or a monitoring app on your device, allows you to understand the amount of electricity being generated and the best time to use it. This is also a great way to monitor your system to ensure it’s working correctly.

Depending on the system you have installed, you may have additional features and functions which can help you track and monitor usage. Refer to your instruction booklet for product details.

Use appliances when generating electricity

The best time to use electrical appliances is when your system is generating electricity. In summer, the peak generation time is between 10am and 4pm, while in winter it’s between 11am and 2pm.

Go electric by installing energy-efficient electrical appliances

Consider replacing your gas or inefficient, old appliances with new efficient, electric alternatives. Our Love Bayside, Electrify Everything program is here to help you make the switch to go all electric.

Use timers on your appliances

If you’re not at home during peak electricity generation times, consider using timers for your appliances so they run during these times. Many appliances have built-in timers to delay the start of their operations.

Depending on your electricity plan and tariffs, the time of day you use your electricity can make a difference to your bills.

Look after your system

Over time, dirt and debris will build up on your solar panels and reduce the amount of electricity being generated. To address this, have your solar system serviced every 2 years by an accredited solar installer or qualified electrician.

As well as cleaning your panels, regular services can identify any issues before they become problems.

Check your electricity pricing plan

Electricity prices are constantly changing. To get the best value from your solar, regularly compare the different electricity plans and tariffs available to you. You can do this via Victorian Energy Compare, a state government comparison website.

Do you want to use renewable energy but aren’t able to install solar panels due to roof constraints?   Instead, switch your electricity purchase to GreenPower, a government-management scheme that enables householders to purchase reliable and renewable energy through their existing retailer. Learn about switching to GreenPower
