Skip bins

To place a skip bin (also known as waste bins or bulk rubbish containers) on council land within the Bayside municipality*, a permit is required.

Council land includes:

  • roadways/laneways
  • rights of way
  • nature strips
  • council car parks

Permits are not required for skip bins placed on private land.

Accreditation

You must be accredited by council to apply for a skip bin permit.

As part of the accreditation process a copy of the applicant's certificate of currency showing a minimum of $10 million public liability cover must be supplied to the council along with a correctly completed application and indemnity guarantee form.

To apply for a permit

Once accredited, a separate permit application must be made for each permit required. A permit must be issued before the bin is placed.

You can contact Council on (03) 9599 4444 or enquiries@bayside.vic.gov.au to obtain a permit application form.

A fee is charged for the permit – contact the council for information about current fees.

About skip bin permits

Permits last for seven days including the placement date. So a permit for a bin placed on Tuesday will be valid through to Monday on the following week.

If a longer period is required a separate application must be lodged for each additional seven day period required.

It is the responsibility of the applicant/supplier to abide by all permit conditions. There are restrictions on how and where Skip/Waste bins can be placed - refer to the permit conditions on the permit application form or the permit for full details.

Suppliers must familiarise themselves with the permit conditions and also with the VicRoads "Code of Practice for the placement of Waste Bins on Road Sides, 2001".

*The Bayside municipality consists of the suburbs of Brighton, parts of Brighton East, Hampton, Hampton East, Sandringham, Black Rock, Beaumaris, parts of Cheltenham and parts of Highett.
