Residents Invited to Briefing on Final Stage of Bayside Bay Trail

Bayside City Council is inviting residents to attend an Information Session on the design for the final stage of the City of Bayside Bay Trail.

This final section of the Trail will run between Cromer and Charman Roads in Beaumaris and extend the safe and accessible bicycle and pedestrian path to cover the full length of the City from Brighton to Beaumaris.

The proposed treatment for this final stage of the Trail has been agreed between Council, VicRoads and the Department of Sustainability and the Environment (DSE) and representatives from all three organisations will be represented at the Information Session to answer questions.

The Bay Trail Information Session will be held on Wednesday April 6 between 6pm and 7.30pm at the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron in Beach Road, Beaumaris (Melways 86 F8).

According to Bayside Mayor Cr Alex del Porto various options for the Cromer Road to Charman Road stretch have been considered by Bayside Council and in February 2009 the Council restated its preference for “an edge of road or verge of road” solution.

“Over the last two years, investigations have been carried out to develop a solution which requires the least foreshore vegetation loss and that complies with both VicRoads and the Department of Sustainability and the Environment standards,” he said

The design that has been prepared by Bayside City Council for presentation at the Information Session complies with VicRoads standards and the Department of Sustainability and the Environment (DSE) requirements.  The design straddles the boundary between the road reserve (VicRoads) and the foreshore (DSE) and is 3m wide with a 1 metre shoulder on the road side and 0.5 metre shoulder on the foreshore and complies with AustRoad guidelines and has been endorsed by a VicRoads safety auditor.

“When complete, this trail will provide Bayside and the wider community with a recreational facility that is safe, accessible to all people, and enable the traversing of Bayside from its most northern tip to its eastern boundary with Kingston, a total of 15 km,” said Cr del Porto.

“The Bay Trail is one of Australia’s best cycling routes but, as with any major project, there are many factors to be considered from a road safety and environmental perspective.

“Therefore, we invite you to come and learn more about this exciting project and hear about the next steps to be taken to extend the trail making it accessible and safe with the minimum environmental impact.  We look forward to seeing you on the night.”

For further information about the plan for the completion of the Bayside Bay Trail, and the forthcoming Information Session, residents should contact Bayside City Council by phone on 9599 4444 or via the Council website on www.bayside.vic.gov.au/baytrail
