Boss James Reserve Pavilion renewal
We’re delivering a new modern home for community sport in Hampton.
The renewal is part of Council’s Sportsground Pavilion Improvement Plan to deliver fit for purpose community infrastructure across the municipality.
The walls of the existing pavilions will be retained with an extension to the rear of the pavilion and realignment of the front of the pavilion to include expansive windows. The environmentally sustainable building reflects the changing needs of community sport.
The facilities will support players of all genders and abilities and provide shelter for spectators and general reserve users.
What will the upgraded building include?
We are delivering an environmentally conscious building that reflects the changing needs of community sport. The new pavilion will support players of all genders and abilities and provides shelter for spectators.
Key elements will include:
- Accessible and gender inclusive changerooms and umpire facilities
- public toilet
- increased storage facilities and a community space for broader community use
- custom-built shed adjacent to the existing cricket nets to store essential club equipment
- improved sustainability features including solar panels on the roof, water-heating systems, and electrical appliances to remove use of natural gas, water tanks and sensor lighting throughout the building
- spacious under cover area
- remarking of accessible car park and additional DDA compliant connective pathway.
How can the community access the building?
While the sports pavilion will primarily support community sport, this beautifully designed building will be available for broader community access (conditions of use apply) between 6am and 3.30pm weekdays to ensure maximum use by our community. Requests for access will be processed via Council’s Recreation and Events team.
What sustainability features will be included?
The proposed pavilion responds to Bayside’s declaration of a climate emergency and features solar panels, expansive windows to maximise use of natural light for heating during the winter months, electric appliances and water heating systems to reduce reliance on natural gas, sensor lighting and water tanks. Sustainable building materials and finishes will be utilised to enhance our environmentally conscious pavilion.
A custom-built shed with external treatment to blend into its surroundings is proposed adjacent to the existing cricket nets to store essential club equipment.
How are we funding this project?
Council is investing $3.4 million to renew the pavilion at Boss James Reserve.
How will the construction affect the reserve?
Temporary construction fencing is installed around the existing building, builder's compound and temporary club facilities to ensure a safe construction environment.
The David Street carpark will be closed to general vehicle access from late October until construction is completed (expected late 2024).
The James Crescent carpark will be accessible for pedestrians but closed to private vehicles for the safe use of the temporary club facilities.
The sportsground will remain open to the public during works and pedestrian access is via walkways around the fenced areas.
During construction, there may be periods of time where sections of the sportsground need to be closed to ensure the safety of workers and the community. We will keep residents notified of any planned closures.
Parking impacts
A temporary no-parking zone on David Street, Hampton between Bluff Road and 104 David Street is in place from 5pm Tuesday 7 November until 5pm Friday 10 November 2023 to facilitate large vehicle movements for the Boss James Pavilion renewal project.
Is there any impact on trees?
The protection of vegetation at the reserve has been prioritised with no tree removal required.
Timing
Site establishment works will begin from the week starting 30 October 2023 with the Pavilion likely to be completed within 12 months.
